Starting today, the U.S. Postal Service is providing Frederiksted’s post office box customers with the convenience, privacy and ease-of-access of having physical post office boxes once again.
The boxes have been installed at nearby 2B Kingstreet, and customers are invited to visit that location from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturdays.
Post office box customers should be aware of the following:
o Post office box customers should continue to use their assigned post office number and ZIP Code. This move does not constitute a change of address for postal customers.
o The temporary location does yet not provide retail services. Stamp sales, package acceptance and money orders, for example, are available through Kingshill.
o The temporary location will be staffed, providing additional handout of mail service for packages that are too large for post office boxes or for customers who have received a notice from letter carriers to pick up an oversized or a signature-required piece of mail.
- Customers who are looking for mail pickup from street addresses should bring the notice card left behind by the letter carrier.
o For the first visit to the new, temporary location, post office box customers should bring identification.
Postal officials are looking to put retail services into the temporary location on Kingstreet, although no time table has been set for that development. Work will continue well into the summer months on the restoration of the Frederiksted Post Office. Postal services, post office boxes and letter carrier operations are all scheduled to return to that location.
There is no change to the delivery of mail, where it is safe to do so, for residential or business customers who now receive street delivery.
Additional updates on the progress with the Frederiksted main post office or with the addition of retail services to the temporary location on Kingstreet will be provided as they come forward.
