Virtue of the Week: Tolerance

Being tolerant is accepting differences. You don’t expect others to think, look, speak or act just like you. You are free of prejudice, knowing that all people have feelings, needs, hopes and dreams.

Tolerance is also accepting things you wish were different with patience and flexibility.

You are practicing tolerance when you:

– Are free of prejudice,

– Make others feel included by reaching out in friendliness,

– Don’t complain about things that cannot be changed,

– Change yourself instead of trying to change others, and

– Accept people the way they are, faults and all.

Affirmation

I am tolerant. I appreciate differences. I overlook people’s faults. I accept with good grace the things I cannot change.

The Family Connection was established in 2005 by the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands as an early-childhood initiative. The mission of TFC is to strengthen the community child care and early education infrastructure in the USVI by building awareness of the importance of early learning and development for success and working with community agencies to promote quality care and education.

One of its efforts is the Virtues Project, an international initiative focused on building peaceful and caring communities.

The Source supports the Virtues Project. We will publish one of the virtues developed by the project each week.

Unlike many news organizations, we haven't put up a paywall - we want to keep our journalism as open as we can. Our sites are more popular than ever, but advertising revenues are falling - so you can see why we could use your help. Our independent journalism costs time, money and hard work to keep you informed, but we do it because we believe that it matters. If everybody who appreciates our reporting efforts were to help fund it for as little as $1, our future would be much more secure. Thanks in advance for your support!
