The Virgin Islands women’s basketball team opened the 2017 FIBA AmeriCup with a tough opponent, the host team, falling 80-48. The V.I. team played well in the first half, but it couldn’t stop 16th-ranked Argentina in the game breaking third. Argentina took the frame 34-7. Imani Tate led the team in scoring with 19 points as well as eight rebounds and three assists. As a team, the Virgin Islands shot 29 percent from the field, including 7.7 percent from beyond the arc. V.I. was the smaller team, but it won the battle of the boards 43-40.
The basketball team from America’s Paradise has no time to rest; it will face 30th-ranked Venezuela at 3:05 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 7. The last time these clubs met it was the South American team edging the Virgin Islands, 69-62, with Victoria Hamilton giving them all kinds of trouble pouring in 20 points and 14 rebounds back in 2015.
