St. Croix Track Club Has Success at Bay Area Track and Field Classic

The St. Croix Track Club competed admirably at the Bay Area Track and Field (BayTaF) Classic, which was held at the University of South Florida on May 26, 27 and 28. Athletes were competing in a variety of events: relays, high jump, long jump, throws, sprints, middle distance, long distance and more.

The BayTaF Classic hosted over 1500 athletes in a three-day track and field meet where there were three team divisions and many age groups between 6 – 18 years of age and non-scoring athletes over 18 years old. The three team divisions were:

Division 1, which includes teams with more than 35 athletes,

Division 2, which includes teams with 21 to 35 athletes, and

Division 3, which includes teams with under 21 athletes.

There were also a variety of track and field events contested where each athlete who makes it to the finals accumulates points for the top eight finishers. First place gains 10 points to 1 point in 8th place.

The St. Croix Track Club took 15 athletes to the competition where St. Croix athletes made it to the finals on 30 separate occasions. The V.I. team had four gold medals, five silvers, eight bronzes and many personal records. This allowed St. Croix to gain 174.5 to place third overall in Division 3 where there were 55 teams.  Our other t

Top performers were Mikaela Smith, 27.5 points; Michelle Smith, 22 points; Anelia Austrie, 16 points; Ariana Edgar, 16 points; Krystahl Gordon, 14 points; Amani Alfred, 13 points.

This was truly a team effort as all Crucian athletes earned points toward the victory. Throughout the two days of competition, St. Croix Track Club enjoyed leading the division at times, but the fierce competition came from a team from the Cayman Islands and one from South Florida. Sponsors included the VI Lottery, Caribbean Reservations and the many individuals who helped make these experiences possible.
