The Challenger and Smith families regret to announce the passing of the late Virginia Veronica “Vero” Smith-Challenger of Mon Bijou, who passed away on March 23.
Vero was born in Trinidad, West Indies, on March 15, 1943. Vero married Walter Challenger on Oct. 15, 1977. She was a member of Frederiksted Assembly of God where she taught Sunday school and worked with Youth Choir groups.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Alexander and Anna Smith; sisters: Thelma Dorham and Esther Smith; brothers: Clement, Frankie and Hillary Smith.
She is survived by husband, Walter Challenger; brothers: Wilmot, Kenny, Beres and Steve Smith; sister, Josephine “Jemma” Barrington; daughters: Vernesica and Jacqueline Mc Donald; daughter-in-law, Lahoma Smith; sons: Gary “Cliff” and Avalon” Clint” Smith, (Glen “Willie” James); and grandchildren: Jamarcious Sharpe, Michael Joseph, David Redwine, Tiana Shell, Phylicia, Gary Jr., Desserae, Djuan, Daliyah, Damali and Jonah Smith, Jakeem Burke, Chanique Challenger, and Zahra, Jonald, Rion, Rihanna and Onesta Mc Donald.
She is also survived by great-grandchildren: Jamarcious Sharpe Jr., Ariona and Alana Marks, Taylor Challenger and Jaa-Ziah Jacobs; nieces and nephews too numerous to mention; as well as close friends and loved ones forged through the years too numerous to mention.
There will be a viewing at 10 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 11, at Frederiksted Assembly of God Church. Interment will be at Kingshill Cemetery.
