The Office of Grants Management Division of Mandatory Grants in Washington, D.C. has informed the V.I. Department of Human Services (DHS) will be receiving $2,731,220 for the Children and Families Program.
“This is great news for our department,” DHS Commissioner Designee Dr. Anita Roberts said. “As a ‘discretionary’ grant, it is never guaranteed that you will be selected to receive the grant. The application goes through a very competitive process.”
Child Care Development Funds provide child care services for low-income family members who work, train for work, attend school or whose children receive (or need to receive) protective services.
“I am elated that many parents will not lose services for their children and may continue receiving assistance without disruption,” Roberts said. “Times are tough both in the private and public sectors of our community. Knowing that our children will be taken care of while their parents work or go to school helps alleviate some stress.”
The commissioner designee said that $955,927 of the allotted amount has been received, and the balance will be transmitted later in the fiscal year.
