Low Pressure Area Moving Across Atlantic toward Islands

The National Weather Service called attention Sunday evening to a low pressure area in the mid-Atlantic that has a high chance of developing in the coming week and may impact the Caribbean.

At 8 p.m. Sunday the system was about 1,300 miles east-southeast of the Windward Islands. While it changed little in organization since earlier Sunday, the National Hurricane Center said environmental conditions are expected to be conducive for gradual development and a tropical depression is likely to form later in the week as the low moves westward to west-northwestward at 15 to 20 mph.

Forecasters gave the system a 30 percent chance for further development in the next two days, but a 90 percent chance in the next five.

"Interests in the Windward Islands, the southeastern and south-central Caribbean Sea, as well as the northern coast of South
America, should monitor the progress of this system," the NHC forecast said.
