Forecasters Give Tropical Wave a Strong Chance of Development

Weather forecasters at the National Hurricane Center are keeping their eye on a tropical wave – designated Invest 98L – in the eastern Atlantic that has a 90 percent chance of developing.

In its 8 p.m. Tuesday tropical outlook, the National Weather Service noted the low-pressure area about 650 miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands. The showers and thunderstorms associated with the system have become more concentrated and better organized during the late afternoon.

“If this development trend continues, advisories would be initiated on a tropical depression tonight or Wednesday,” the outlook reported.

The NWS put the chances of formation through the next 48 hours at 90 percent, and the chance of further development in the next five days also at 90 percent.

This system is expected to move generally northwestward over the open waters of the central Atlantic during the next several days.
