For almost a century, public and private schools, and businesses have collaborated to develop a curriculum designed to educate students about the world of business. It is the Junior Achievement program, which brings to the classroom private sector representatives to teach students in all grades the value of money, how it is used, the role of labor and the basics of entrepreneurship. Because the environment in which business is conducted is always evolving, those charged with updating the curriculum are constantly adjusting to changes in the business climate.
At a Government House seminar, followed by a dinner, representatives of Junior Achievement programs from throughout the Caribbean Region gathered to plan Junior Achievement’s lessons for the future.
Lt. Gov. Osbert Potter hosted the gathering, supporting the goals of Junior Achievement and expressing appreciation to those who contribute their time and business expertise to the development of the next generation of enterprising people. The guest speaker was Dr. Haldane Davies, vice president of the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI), which is a popular choice of students from the Caribbean region.
Junior Achievement reaches students of all ages from grades kindergarten through 12th grade. Nearly 1,200 V.I. student participated just in the last semester. For nearly 100 years, it has given a head start to future business people.
