The St. Croix Track Club (STXTC) Mustangs won 11 medals at the AAJI (Asociacion de Atletismo Juvenil e Infantil) Championships for 14-19 year-olds in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, on May 22. STXTC took nine athletes who qualified for the championships to the games. The 200 meters had an A-finals and a B-finals due to rain and timing mishaps at the first qualifier. V.I. athletes were Anelia Austrie, Krystahl Gordon, Xiaxiang Washington, Mikaela Smith, Layla Browne, Merkela Moncherry, Rodney Griffin, Lamar Miller and Gregory Gibson. There were many personal bests. The events were very competitive despite the hot and humid temperature.
Medal winners:
*Anelia Austrie — 1st in high jump and triple jump
Rodney Griffin — 2nd in 200m and 400m
Mikaela Smith — 2nd in 400m and 3rd in 800m
Lamar Miller — 1st in B finals of 200m
Krystahl Gordon — 2nd in triple jump
Layla Browne — 3rd in discus
Merkela Moncherry — 1st in B finals of 200m
Gregory Gibson — 3rd in B finals of 200m
St. Croix Track Club athletes performed outstandingly! They went up against the best that Puerto Rico has in the 14-19 age group in track and field. There were 38 teams in the three meet series, and the Virgin Islanders placed 10th overall. STXTC is very thankful to its sponsors who help make it possible for the athletes to travel and represent the Virgin Islands.
