St. Croix Man Charged with Animal Cruelty

The Virgin Islands Police Department on Wednesday arrested Ala Zatar and charged him with two counts of animal abuse and disturbance of the peace after an incident in which two dogs were injured.

The arrest took place under a warrant executed at the rear of Bienvenidos Mini Mart.

According to the police, Zatar struck two dogs with a machete on Friday, causing severe injuries about the dogs’ bodies. The owner of the two dogs positively identified Zatar as the individual who struck his dogs with a machete in his presence, the report said.

Bail for Zatar was set at $15,000 by the Virgin Islands Superior Court. Unable to post bail, Zatar was remanded to the Adult Correctional Facility at Golden Grove pending his advice of rights hearing.
