Senior District Court Judge Raymond L. Finch on Thursday sentenced Rodney Stanley, 30, an inmate at the Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility on St. Croix to one month of imprisonment for possession of prison contraband, U.S. Attorney Ronald W. Sharpe announced.
Finch also ordered Woods to serve one year of supervised release and pay a $25 mandatory assessment.
By law the sentence of imprisonment must be consecutive to the sentence he is currently serving for voluntary manslaughter.
On Oct. 9, Stanley pleaded guilty to one count of possession of prison contraband. As part of his plea, Woods admitted that on Nov. 15, 2012, while he was an inmate at Golden Grove, he possessed a cellular telephone which was hidden in his cell in the head of his mattress.
Cellular telephones are prohibited contraband in correctional facilities because they are known to be used by prisoners to intimidate witnesses, orchestrate narcotics transactions and facilitate other criminal activity, including murders.
The case was investigated by the Virgin Islands Bureau of Corrections and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rami S. Badawy.
