AKA Sorority Celebrates 108 Years of Service

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. will celebrate its 108th Founders’ Day on Friday, Jan. 15. The sorority is an international community service organization of college women founded on Jan. 15, 1908, at Howard University in Washington, D.C., by 16 courageous young women. It is the first Greek letter sorority for black college women and boasts over 265,000 members in more than 910 chapters around the world.
There are four chapters in the Virgin Islands: Sigma Theta Omega Graduate Chapter and Rho Omicron Undergraduate Chapter at the University of the Virgin Islands in the St. Thomas-St. John District, and Mu Gamma Omega Graduate Chapter and Rho Xi Undergraduate Chapter at the University of UVI St. Croix campus.
AKA is a community service organization whose mission is to provide “Service to All Mankind.” The sorority implements this through its many service projects, such as the ASCEND Program for high school students and other programs that benefit the community and the UVI campus.
