Man Killed in Auto Accident

Juan Matias, a 50-year-old resident of Williams Delight, died Wednesday after being struck by a moving vehicle while walking along the Melvin H Evans Highway, the V.I. Police Department reported.

The 911 emergency call center received a report at 6:52 p.m. Wednesday of an auto incident involving a pedestrian located on the Melvin H. Evans Highway in the vicinity of Williams Delight.

Officers arriving at the scene found Matias. According to police he appeared to have multiple injuries, inducing a contusion to the left side of his head and a contusion to the left knee. He had been struck by a vehicle traveling westbound.

Matias was taken to the Juan F. Luis Memorial Hospital. At approximately 9:55 p.m. he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

The news release did not say whether the driver of the vehicle was known. The incident is still under investigation. Police asked anyone with information to call 911, or contact the anonymous tip service, Crime Stoppers USVI, at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.crimestoppersusvi.org.
