Master Sgt. Hugh V. James Dies at 85

Master Sgt. Hugh V. James Master Sergeant Hugh V. James died on Oct. 7, in Columbus, Georgia. He was born Sept. 7, 1930, to Joseph and Czarine (Todman) James on St. Croix, U.S.V.I. He taught school in Christiansted, St. Croix, prior to joining the U.S. Army.
After 30 years of service in the Army, he retired as Master Sergeant, and took up residency in Columbus, along with his wife Sherry. Hugh was a member of St. Mary’s Magdalene Episcopal Church in Columbus. He was a lifelong member of the American Legion, an active member of the New York group the Virgin Islands Freshwater Yankees, a 33° Mason of Modern Free and Accepted Masons of the World Inc., a member of Fountain City Lodge No. 225 and Joppa Temple of Columbus, Ga. He was also a member of The Blind Veterans Association, receiving an award in 2014.
He was predeceased by his siblings: Frederico, Henrikayta, Henry, Vertilley, Norma, Lyra, Lenore, Helena, Mark, Joseph and Vernal.
He is survived by his loving and supportive wife, Sherry; granddaughter, Davilon Taylor; sister–in-law, Sara James of St. Croix; cousin, Kathleen James Gittens of New York; and numerous nephews and nieces in the Virgin Islands and within the United States.
A viewing will be held from 1-6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct 14. A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15, at Scroniers Funeral Home, Columbus, Ga. His final resting place will be with full military honors at Veterans National Cemetery in Alabama.
