Rainfall Throughout The Territory

All three islands got some rain on Friday but meteorologist Jose Alamo at the National Weather Service in San Juan said he doesn’t expect any significant accumulations.

“The showers are decreasing in number,” he said.

A tropical wave is approaching the area, but Alamo said it will only bring a few passing showers through Saturday and early Sunday.

“It should dry quickly Sunday morning,” Alamo said.

As for Friday’s rain, the north west tip of St. Thomas in the Stumpy Bay area got the most. Alamo said radar estimates show the area got 1.5 inches of rain between midnight and 7 p.m.

“It’s a small line of showers that’s been affecting the north to north west portion of St. Thomas,” Alamo said.

He said on the north and north west side of St. Thomas, the radar showed anywhere between a half to one inch of rainfall.

“And the eastern half of St. Thomas got a trace,” he said.

He said the official weather station at the Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas reported .5 inches of rain since midnight, and most of that fell in the afternoon.

According to Alamo, radar estimates indicate the north west tip of St. Croix got a half inch of rain. He said other spots on the western half of the island got anywhere between .1 inches of rain to .5 inches.

Alamo said only the northern fringes of St. John received some light rain.

With nearly three months to go until hurricane season is over on Nov. 30, residents should keep their eyes on the weather as tropical waves continue to roll off the African coast.

One is exiting Friday, and Alamo said the National Hurricane Center is giving it a 70 percent chance of it developing into something stronger over the next five days.

While it currently looks like it’s heading toward the Virgin Islands, Alamo said it’s so far out that it’s way too soon to know what this wave will do.

“I’m guesstimating it will be here next weekend,” he said.

And if it develops, he said, all bets are off.
