District Court Judge Wilma A. Lewis sentenced Marcel Scotland, 31, to six months in prison Wednesday for providing prison contraband, according to U.S. Attorney Ronald W. Sharpe.
Lewis also sentenced Scotland to serve three years of supervised release and pay a fine of $1,000 and a special assessment of $100.
Scotland pleaded guilty Jan. 16 in District Court on St. Croix to providing prison contraband. According to the plea agreement filed Jan. 31, Scotland was a corrections officer employed with the Virgin Islands Bureau of Corrections on St. Croix.
When Scotland entered the Golden Grove Correctional Facility on that day, a search of his bag by a fellow corrections officer revealed multiple cigarette lighters, rolling papers, cookies, multiple “dime baggies,” and a bag containing approximately 64 grams of marijuana.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Corrections and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Alphonso Andrews.
