Man Killed, Woman Injured in Shooting

One man was killed and a woman injured in a shooting Wednesday night in Christiansted.

The dead was identified by the V.I. Police Department as Humberto Ortiz, 30. Police said the injured woman, identified as 24-year-old Jasandra Felix, was being treated for her injuries at the Juan F. Luis Memorial Hospital.

It was the ninth homicide on St. Croix since the beginning of the year, the 23rd in the territory.

According to the report, at 8:35 p.m. 911 dispatchers received several reports of gun been fired in the Sunday Market area of Christiansted, in the vicinity of Bienveneto, and that two people were injured.

Officers responding to the area discovered a wounded male and female, both who had been shot multiple times. An ambulance was summoned to the scene and transported both victims to the Juan F. Luis Hospital and Medical Center’s Emergency Room for treatment, where Ortiz succumbed to his wounds.

No information on Felix’s condition was available late Wednesday.

The preliminary investigation indicated that during a power outage in downtown Christiansted, an unknown number of individuals approached the area and fired at people gathered in the vicinity of Bienveneto. The assailants then fled the area on foot, witnesses told police.

No description was provided of any of the suspects.

Detectives with the Criminal Investigation Bureau are investigating the matter.
