Cyclist Dies After Being Hit by Van

A 61-year-old St. Croix man died Wednesday morning after the bicycle he was riding collided with a van on Queen Mary Highway.

The victim was identified by the V.I. Police Department as Bienvenido Camacho of New Street, Frederiksted..

According to the police report, several witnesses stated that a taxi van was traveling east to west on the Queen Mary Highway in the Estate Hannah’s Rest, near the the Amigo’s Service Station, while Camacho was riding a bicycle traveling west to east. The witnesses said Camacho "blew a whistle" and made a hand signal, indicating his intent to cross the street. As the man crossed the street astride his bicycle, he was struck by the van in the west bound lane.

At about 7 a.m. Wednesday the 911 emergency call center received notification of a severe vehicular accident. Officers with the Traffic Investigation Bureau responded to the scene and spoke with several witnesses.


An ambulance responded to the scene and transported Camacho to the Juan F. Luis Memorial Hospital,where he succumbed to his injuries.

The Traffic Investigation Bureau is continuing to look into the incident.
