Birthday Celebration Will Re-Dedicate Dorsch Cultural Activities Center

A posthumous 100th birthday party will celebrate the life of Delta M. Dorsch and re-dedicate Frederiksted’s Dorsch Cultural Activities Center, acting Planning Commissioner Dawn L. Henry announced Monday.

The celebration will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. March 27 Dorsch Cultural Activities Center in Frederiksted.

Dorsch "was revered by many as a cultural icon for her years of chronicling and preserving the language art tradition of Virgin Islands storytelling for more than 70 years prior to her passing in 2011 at the ripe age of 95," Henry said.

The event will be free and open to the public.

The center is named after Frederick D. Dorsch, to whom Delta Dorsch was married. Frederick Dorsch was a humanist, educator, civic enthusiast and was the V.I. Municipal Council School Superintendent before he died in 1960.

Born in Frederiksted in 1915, Delta Dorsch preserved some of St. Croix’s history and culture in her book, "The Role of the Storyteller in the Preservation of Virgin Islands Culture." She also contributed to Our Town Frederiksted’s current edition of "The Glory Days of Frederiksted."

More information about the event is available by calling Betty Mahoney, Director Virgin Islands Council on the Arts, at 1-340-774-5984, or Ingrid Bough, territorial director of libraries, archives and museums at 1-340-773-5715.

The event is being planned by the Department of Planning and Natural Resources, the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts, the Division of Libraries, Archives and Museums, and the Virgin Islands State Historic Preservation Office, in partnership with Our Town Frederiksted.
