Former Government House Spokesman Now at WAPA

Jean Greaux, Jr., who served as Government House communications director through both terms of the deJongh administration, was recently appointed director of corporate communications for the V.I. Water and Power Authority.

The salary for the position is $95,000, according to Hugo Hodge, WAPA executive director.

There was no official announcement, but Greaux’s name appeared as a contact person on a recent WAPA press release.

Contacted about his new position, Greaux said “I love it. It’s an exciting time for the authority.”

A number of initiatives are about to come to fruition, he said. WAPA is about to accept the first of 10 tanks for the conversion to propane for a large portion of electricity production on St. Thomas; the conversion on St. Croix should start at the end of March or beginning of April; the solar farm by the Donoe bypass on St. Thomas is already being tested and should be dedicated at the end of this month; and more consumer-friendly meters are being installed for residential customers so they can more easily track their power consumption.

“You don’t have an appreciation of it until you see it up close,” Greaux said of the utility actions.

WAPA now has three people on staff in communications, but Hodge said all are needed because “we have a lot to tell.” In addition to keeping the public informed, “We need it for internal communications as well” and added, “I had a vacancy to fill.”

Cassandra Dunn, former director of communications, retired last fall.

“I think he’s a great addition to the authority,” Hodge said. “Replacing Cassandra Dunn’s a daunting task. I think we found a good one.”

Greaux worked for 20 years as a broadcast journalist in the Virgin Islands. Former Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr. appointed him the Government House spokesman in January 2007, at the start of his first term. Just prior to that, Greaux was news director and network director for Ackley Media Group. He also served as spokesman for former Gov. Roy L. Schneider.
