St. Croix Sixth Grader Wins Virgin Islands Short Story Contest

Alfredo Andrews School sixth grader Caliyah Helliger won the Cultural Conquest Association’s V.I. Short Story contest, winning a one-year subscription to IXL.com along with a hardcover copy of her story, the CCA announced Thursday.

Helliger submitted a short story highlighting how to prepare a local dish while giving a hands-on lesson to her visiting cousin.

CCA is an organization composed of young professionals eager to make a difference in the community by empowering the youth of the Virgin Islands with knowledge. One of the organization’s priorities is keeping the local culture alive by reigniting the fire of Virgin Islands pride and creating an exhilarating educational experience, according to the organization.

The IXL.com website has an array of interactive, online math, science, language and literature practice activities, aimed at improving academic performance and test scores.

Visit CCA’s Facebook page or call 340-332-1596 for upcoming contests in 2015.
