Police ID Homicide Victim as William Bennett

The man found dead Tuesday evening in the Sapphire Village Apartment has been identified as 60-year-old William Bennett, the V.I. Police Department reported Friday.

Bennett’s body was found shortly before 9 p.m. in the apartment the police said was his home. According to the earlier report, several of Bennett’s acquaintances said they had not seen him for several days and went to his apartment, where they found the body.

Bennett was a St. Thomas resident who moved to the territory from Tennessee, the police said. There was no indication of how long he had lived on the island.

The police have provided no information about the cause of death, what wounds Bennett suffered or why they are investigating the crime as a homicide.

Detectives as still awaiting the results of an autopsy, according to Wednesday’s statement, which they hope will identify the cause of death.
