Internationally Renowned Sculptor Ward Elicker Opens Gallery

Ward Elicker in his studioWard Elicker will host an afternoon reception in his new gallery. Meet the sculptor and view his exquisite, figurative bronze art, displayed for sale in one of Frederiksted’s loveliest historic buildings. Come enjoy a glass of wine, some light fare, and perhaps find that perfect holiday gift. The reception will be held from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14, at Jasmine Manor, 402 Prince Street, Frederiksted.
Ward Elicker and his family moved to St. Croix from Philadelphia in September. Though newly arrived, he has deep ties to the Caribbean. He and wife, Alice Holm, lived in Puerto Rico during the 1990s where he sculpted and produced work in their rainforest foundry. He was dubbed “Man of Bronze” by the San Juan Star and El Nuevo Dia.
For the past decade the Elickers have endured the winters of his hometown Philadelphia. There he expanded his foundry and completed a number of large-scale Philadelphia sculptures such as Chinatown’s 4 Pearl Dragons. All the while the artist maintained his ties in Puerto Rico and installed several large public works in San Juan over the years, as well. But Elicker longed for the day he would once again sculpt in the warm island air and feel inspiration from the magical waters of the Caribbean.
As it turned out, St. Croix won his heart this time. Here the ocean is at its most magical and the sunsets are magnificent. ”This is a place where art can truly be made,” said Elicker. “It feels great to finally be back again.” Elicker has already begun work on a new series, drawing from the inspiration of his new island home.
