Gillette Wall-to-Wall Sprint Triathlon, Try-a-Tri Results Announced

Triathletes listening to the course talk at Cane Bay (photo by Roger Hatfield). The Gillette Wall-to-Wall Sprint Triathlon and Try-a-Tri took place at Cane Bay on Sunday, Oct. 19. The rollers on the sea looked a bit scary from the beach, but the lead swimmers, Jay Gleason and Briana Burns, plowed through like it was pool water. The race was tight in the women’s field, with the top five ladies finishing the ½-mile swim within a minute of each other.
Gleason kept a fast pace on the 15-mile bike course, but Troy Holloway posted the fastest split of the race and caught up Matt Crafts of St. John, who was in second place. Gleason held the lead on the 3-mile run; Crafts was second and Holloway finished third. The fastest run split of the race was posted by relay runner Chuck Emerson, a Pennsylvania student at Barry University – 17:48. The team of Briana Burns, Sue Brown and Chuck Emerson was the overall first finisher in an impressive time of 1:12:30.Jason Snow and Lukata Samuel on the bike course (photo by Roger Hatfield).
The exciting women’s race took a new spin when Esther Ellis and Julie Sommer caught up to and passed Bridget Klein on the bike. The wet, curvy roads made Klein a bit cautious, so she eased on the bike and kept the competitors in her sight. Knowing that that she was at least two minutes behind when starting the final leg, Klein switched back to her "normal" gear, leading her to a first place finish. Ellis was second and Sommer was third.
Amber Stevens, a nurse at Continuum Care, lead the small Try-a-Tri field right from the start. She posted the fastest time in all three legs of the short race. Kaeden Gleason, a 7-year-old student at Good Hope Christian Day School, was the first male finisher. The full results are attached below.
The next race on the tri calendar is the Caribbean Classic Olympic, Sprint and Try-a-Tri on Nov. 16 at Cramer’s Park. Following that is the Junior Tri VI Splash ‘n Dash at Chenay Bay on Nov. 30. The swim/run event is open to kids of all abilities from ages 5 to 15.
