We Have Such a Good Life Here

Dear Source:
“All the world is mad about us, except for thee and me and sometimes I wonder about me.”
We, on our beautiful St. Croix often beat ourselves to a pulp, then we beat the pulp up. We are met now on a battlefield of survival—our survival. Oh, I don’t mean literal survival, like we will die of hunger or thirst but the social economic survival of our wonderful and historic community. We read only the deficits in the papers and hear the “what’s wrong” constant comments on the talk shows. We more often hear what’s wrong from our candidates for public office then what’s great. I know some people want to be victims of every sorrow to increase their sense of belonging and victimhood. However these easy feelings do not help the community or make things better. In many ways “woes me” is a selfish act. I know some people have hard times and I feel for them but many stories are to self-serving.
Dear reader I myself feel sorry for myself from time to time. When I do I look at one of our tall palm trees in town and say to myself don’t look at the trash under it but at the beauty above. We have such a good life here, our air comes across the vast Atlantic ocean and we are the first to breathe it. No one had this breath before us, wow. The clouds pass by at great speed and sprinkle rain drops to keep us green. The sea is warm as is the air but never really hot. The nights are cool with the trade winds blowing. No wonder humans have lived here for thousands of years, it’s still a great place for humans.
Let us come back in off the ledge, there is no reason to jump. Our world is not ending it is changing. We need our fellow Cruzans to fight not to give up. We must see the enemy is not ourselves even though we could do better but that there are controllable forces who hold part our future in their and we must yell “we are not going to take it any longer” and insist on our fair share. The things that worry us right now will get fixed if we stand together as an island community and demand of others what we demand of our selves. Don’t jump – fight. The hospital will be fixed, the refinery will in some fashion start up again, the sun will rise, the moon will set, and when things are once again in their proper place we will see how good life is. Thank you my beloved Island of Santa Cruz.
