IRB Files Lien for Unpaid Taxes at JFL

On Friday the Internal Revenue Bureau took action against cash assets of the Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital to collect outstanding taxes, before reaching a compromise by the end of the day, Government House has confirmed.

"While the bureau cannot comment on specific taxpayer cases, Government House can confirm that an action was taken and a compromise was arrived at by the end of the day today," Government House spokesman Jean Greaux said in a statement.

The Source contacted Government House for comment after receiving multiple reports that many hospital employees’ paychecks were held up because IRB had placed a lien against the hospital.

As the government has done several times over the past year, Gov. John deJongh Jr. authorized the Office of Management and Budget and Department of Finance to make an advance appropriation release, this time of $1.2 million, to the hospital. Members of the administration’s financial team also spoke with bank officials to make sure payroll checks issued Thursday would be honored. Government House expects to take additional steps next week to ensure that the next payroll this month is also met, according to the statement.

The emergency requests from JFL Hospital for Fiscal Year 2014 allotment advances have substantially disrupted the central government’s cash flow planning, according to Greaux, who said the administration has been raising alarms to the Legislature about the hospital’s precarious financial situation.
