Flash Flood Warning on St. Thomas

A flash flood advisory is in effect for St. Thomas, where heavy thunderstorms have already caused rockslides and flooding, according to VITEMA. Residents have reported up to a foot of water on the road in Sub Base.

VITEMA’s 911 Communications Center has received several reports that large rocks are falling along Crown Mountain Road and that roadways across the island are flooded. According to VITEMA, residents have called to report flooding along Main Street, Harwood Highway, Brookman Road, in Tutu in the vicinity of the Tutu Park Mall entrance and Metro Motors, the Griffith Park area, Lindberg Bay around UVI and the Police Station, Nisky, and Altona in the vicinity of Gottlieb Gas Station.

According to the National Weather Service, another one to three inches of rain are possible on St. Thomas on Thursday. VITEMA is warning drivers to avoid the road and to drive very cautiously if they must go out. They warned never drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway, that flood waters are usually deeper than they appear, and that just one foot of water of flowing water is powerful enough to sweep vehicles off the road.

Weather reports indicate more thunder showers are likely Thursday afternoon and evening, Friday and over the weekend.
