Collision Injures Three, One Critically

 Downed lightpole and broken sign on Veterans Drive.Three men were injured, one critically, when two cars collided early Sunday, sending one vehicle flipping down Veterans Drive, according to St. Thomas/St. John Police Chief Darren Foy.

According to information supplied by the chief, at about 40 minutes after midnight Sunday, a gray Mitsibushi Endeavor – a mid-sized SUV – was traveling west on Veterans Drive. At the same time, a white Toyota Corolla was eastbound on Veterans, and made a right turn across traffic, colliding with the Misubishi.

The Mitsubishi was pushed into a utility pole and overturned several times before coming to rest, Foy said.

According to the chief, Florencio Hernandez, 60, the driver of the Toyota, broke his right ankle and injured his hip.

Markim Tonge, 27, was a passenger in the Mitsubishi. According to Chief Foy, he was pinned inside the vehicle and had to be extricated with the Jaws of Life. He was transported to the Schneider Regional Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition with a severe brain injury and broken legs.

Kyle Stewart, 21, the driver of the Misubishi, sustained minor bruises.

The accident occured in the vicinity of the Seaborne terminal on the waterfront. It is being investigated by officers of the V.I. Police Department Traffic Bureau.
