V.I. Triathlon Federation Kicks Off With October Surprise in September

The October Surprise in September Triathlon brought together a fun group of triathletes to kick off the racing season on St. Croix. The race offered an individual sprint-distance triathlon and relay, as well as a shorter distance Try-a-Tri. The 600-m swim, 13-mile bike and 3-mile run were held at 7 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 22, at Coconuts on the Beach in Frederiksted.
Continuing his winning ways on the "West Is Best" course, 58-year-old Wayne Nichols dominated the field by posting the fastest bike split of the day on the 13-mile flat course. His finish time was 1:05:43. Troy Holloway, recently back from competing in London in the Age Group World Triathlon Championships, was just 34 seconds behind at the finish. Jay Gleason, who also competed in London last week, finished about one minute later in third place.
Bridget Campbell, leading the women’s field from the start, finished over 4 minutes ahead of second-place finisher Julie Sommer, with an overall time of 1:06:45. Sommer posted the women’s fastest bike split. Theresa Harper was third.
The relay team of JJ Washshah, Glenn Massiah and Olga Capriola was the first in that division to cross the line. Their time was 1:10:50.
The Try-a-Tri race was dominated by "the younger generation"…and in the same family. GHCDS student Alec was the first male and Nati Kuipers was the first female.
After the awards ceremony, the Virgin Islands Triathlon Federation (VITF) distributed the prizes to the winners of the 2012-2013 Individual Point Series. The top five were: 1st – John Salo/Julie Sommer, 2nd – Troy Holloway/Carol Fricks/Theresa Harper, 3rd – Scott Fricks, 4th – Billy Bohlke/Sissel Holloway and Jen Andrews, 5th – Wayne Nichols. In order to participate in the 2013-2014 Point Series athletes must be a current VITF member. Attached is the list of current members and the updated points after today’s race. An athlete’s highest points earned in four sprint races and one Olympic-distance race are added up at the end of the season in April.
For this season, two very generous sponsors, Mike Klein of Jolly Roger Charters and Troy Holloway of Holloway Solar, have donated to the top VITF Male and Female Winner a free entry into the IM 70.3 St. Croix.
