Peace Day Celebrated at UVI

A group of Rotarians and other peace advocates formed a human peace symbol on the lawn of the University of the Virgin Islands’ St. Croix campus on Wednesday morning for an aerial photo and then joined dozens of college students in activities to commemorate International Peace Day, which is Sept. 21.

Opening the program, which was shared via video conference with the St. Thomas campus, a group of English students recited several Chinese proverbs, including, “If there is light in the soul, there will be beauty in the person. If there is beauty in the person, there will be harmony in the house. If there is harmony in the house, there will be order in the nation. If there is order in the nation, there will be peace in the world.”

From that opening statement to the end of the program two hours later, facilitators created a relaxing atmosphere with breathing exercises and meditation. Yoga instructor Deborah Phillips talked about chi – the life force – and how relaxed breathing can lead to inner peace. She then demonstrated and led several breathing exercises that appeared to calm the audience of all ages that filled the Little Theater.

Scherrayn Garcia, UVI instructor and academic advisor, talked about the benefits of meditation to eliminate stress, inner turmoil and frustration. She said to be happy, people should be willing to forgive and let go of the past, enjoy their happiness, embrace success and meditate.

“There will be no peace unless you start within,” Garcia said as she led a meditation exercise.

Patricia Towal, UVI dean of student affairs, talked about building healthy relationships and said two-way communication is one of the most important components. She advised talking about “I” feelings rather than using accusatory “you did it” statements. Following the Golden Rule also helps, she said.

There was an explanation and demonstration by acupuncturist Serena Sundaram of Communichi Central. She said the practice can help relieve migraine headaches, depression and back pain.

Leon Wheeler, a UVI sophomore from St. Croix, was interested in the acupuncture presentation. He said he learned something new, in addition to massage, to help relieve his mother’s pain. He said the presentations taught him “there are different aspects to find who we are, describing ourselves and our spirits.”

The program was created as a result of the shooting on campus last April that left a young man dead, according to organizer Mary Jo Wilder. It was held on Wednesday rather than Saturday, the official Peace Day, because there were more people on the campus.

English and writing students from several classes attended and were assigned to write reports on the activities.

“I teach writing. I wanted to give them something to write about, something relevant,” Wilder said.

On Saturday, Peace Day events, including music and peace pledges, will be held on St. Croix at the Sunny Isle Amphitheater from 2 – 6 p.m.

Interfaith Coalition will show a film, “For the Next 7 Generations,” at 6 p.m. at the Christiansted American Legion Hall on Hospital Street. The film is about the vision of 13 indigenous tribal grandmothers. Refreshments will be served and $15 is the suggested donation.

On St. Thomas, a school activity is planned for Friday and a peace discussion will be broadcast from 4-6 p.m. on WUVI 1090 AM on Saturday.
