V.I. Pace Runners Gives Results of 31st Labor Day 5K Road Race

Start of the 31st Labor Day 5K (St. Croix Track Club Photo) The last time Juan Robles ran a race on the scenic North Shore Road was the NACAC 10K Road Race Championship in 2011. Malique Smith of the St. Croix Track Club/St. Croix Educational Complex High School was the defending champion of the Labor Day event along with Billy Bohlke, the holder of the course record (16:22).
They were there on Monday to give it yet another shot. Robles, an aspiring coach and Smith, the top high school distance runner in the Virgin Islands, took it out early with Bohlke, the V.I. national record holder for distances 1500 to 5K, and a couple others in hot pursuit as the first half of the race on the downhill to flat curving road. Robles, a Turabo University and Central High School graduate, hammered the hills on the return to Arawak Bay…The Inn at Salt River and the finish. His time was 16:41. Smith was right there with a second place finish and personal record time of 17:23; Joshua Brewer was on Smith’s heels for third place with a time of 17:37; Bohlke gave it a good shot with a fourth place time of 17:59; and John Salo kept it going for fifth in 18:28.
Bridget Campbell ran her first St. Croix race and broke Ana Guitierrez’s 2012 course record (20:55) as she won the race going away with a time of 20:05; Mollier Nadler was second in 22:10; Rachel Conoff of St.Croix Track Club/Country Day-Good Hope School was third in 23:04; Jamie Gavareski was fourth in 24:44; and Megan Griffith was fifth in 25:14
The next event on the V.I. Pace Runners Calendar is the 3rd Annual Virgin Islands 10K Road Race Championships on Sept. 22.
