Fire Destroys Boat in Christiansted Harbor

A 32-foot boat named Stingray was destroyed by fire Tuesday morning, according to St. Croix Fire Service Chief Angel Torres.

"The boat was destroyed, it is no longer salvageable," Torres said.

The fire broke out at about 11:05 a.m. as the boat was in the vicinity of the the Christiansted boardwalk near the King’s Alley, according to the report. Torres, firefighters were able to extinguish the boat fire within minutes of arriving on the scene, and fiberglass fumes quickly dissipated.

One individual is receiving treatment for burns, Torres said. No other injuries were been reported. Torres did not have the names of Stingray’s owners, but said the one injury was to one of them.

Torres said he could not yet report a cause for the fire.

"We’re still investigating, trying to get more information from the owner and gather evidence about what happened," he said.

Traffic in the downtown Christiansted area remained open to people and vehicles.
