The Virgin Islands 9-10 Little League fell to Mexico, 11-1, Monday in game two of their three round robin games at the 2013 Latin American regional tournament in Panama City.
Shakeem Sackey went 2 for 2 at the plate, Raphael Jackson III was 1 for 1 and Kahleem Jacobs was 1 for 2, but that was about all the positive news for the V. I. in the game. The V. I. scored their one and only run in the bottom of the first inning on a bases-loaded walk to V. I. batter Caliquan Maynard.
But Mexico scored four runs in the top of the inning and scored four more in the second. Mexico held the V. I. scoreless the rest of the game and scored three more in the third.
The game was called after the Virgin Islanders batted in the bottom of the fourth inning due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Sackey was also the pitcher for the V. I., and gave up 11 runs, 10 of them earned. He also struck out three Mexican batters and did not walk any.
The V. I. team will face Costa Rica on Tuesday at noon to close out pool play. There are three pools in the tournament, the winner of each pool advancing to the semifinals along with the team with the best Runs-Allowed Ratio in the group of the remaining teams.
