Volleyball Tournament Continues in Guadalupe on July 26 and 27

On Friday, July 26, at Pointe-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe, Capt. Rajahl Moxey led by example with 16 points as little fancied Bahamas stunned U.S. Virgin Islands 3-1 (25-16, 19-25, 25-17, 26-24) in the first of a quarterfinal double-header at the Ninth CAZOVA Junior U21 Men’s Championship.
Kenton Dawkins added ten points, three of which were blocks while Justin Smith added nine the Bahamians who entered the match at the Paul Chonchon Sports and Cultural Centre with a 0-2 record.
U.S.V.I. was led by its captain Nayib Gonzalez, who scored a match high 20 points, inclusive of three aces. The losers also got 16 points from Aseah Thomas.
By virtue of its victory, Bahamas advanced to the semifinals where it will face either Trinidad & Tobago or Curacao on Saturday.
An elated Moxey said he was very satisfied his players finally played together as a unit.
“In our first two matches, we played in spurts and never got it together as a unit, but today we came together as a team, and it showed in the result, “ said Moxey.
Gonzalez, commenting on the loss, said it was simply a case of the better team on the day winning the match.
“Both teams came out pushing very hard, and in the end our service game killed us a lot. We were not getting our serves on target, and this helped Bahamas to get a lot of free points,” said Gonzalez.
On Saturday, July 27, Aseah Thomas and captain Nayib Gonzalez tallied a combined 43 points as the U.S. Virgin Islands defeated host Guadeloupe 25-21, 20-25, 20-25, 25-21, 15-9 in their fifth place playoff at the Ninth CAZOVA Junior Men’s Championship at the Paul Chonchon Sports and Cultural Centre.
Thomas finished with 23 points, 7 of which were aces, and one block, while Thomas had 20 points, all on kills in the match, which lasted five minutes short of two hours.
Malick Frederic was the main scorer for Guadeloupe with 22 points while Yannis Biodore and Meidhy Tacita added 15 and 10, respectively.
Gonzalez, while delighted with the win, said it was a very good match by both teams, but his team played with a lot more heart and passion than they did in previous matches and deserved the win.
A disappointed Willy Corenthin, captain of Guadeloupe, who had no impact on the match said it was a very good game by both teams, but his team lacked the spirit.
“We knew it was going to be a tough battle as no team wanted to finish last, but we just was not able to get the win.
