Park Youth Program Offers Summer Jobs

As it has nearly every year since the mid-1970s, V.I. National Park will run its summer Youth Conservation Corps Program again this year, offering six-week jobs for 16 youths. The deadline for applications is June 13.

“It gives students a chance to earn some money and to learn about the mission of the park,” said Paul Thomas, the park’s chief of interpretation.

The jobs pay $7.25 an hour. They begin June 24 and run through Aug. 2.

A lot of the jobs focus on maintenance, but Thomas said some provide exposure to the park’s resource management, interpretation and visitor activities.

Thomas said the park hopes that the jobs will interest students in park careers either at the St. John park or in other national parks.

Selection will be made by random drawing.

Applicants must be 15 to 18 years of old and a U.S. citizen or have permanent residency status.

Applications are available at park Visitor Center in Cruz Bay between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

For more information, contact park administrative officer Vanessa Taliaferro-Robinson at 776-6201 ext. 260 or maintenance mechanic supervisor Jean-Louis Williams at 693-8989 ext. 22.
