American Red Cross Gives Advice on Hurricane Season Preparedness

American Red Cross advises that everyone get a kit. On the start of this year’s hurricane season Saturday, June 1, American Red Cross USVI Chapter emphasizes the importance of being prepared for any natural disaster. For this reason, it’s important to revise or keep all supplies in an easy-to-carry, emergency preparedness kit that can be used at home or taken along in case of evacuation. Along with the kit, people should follow these additional tips from the American Red Cross.
1. Get a kit. Remember to include water for three days and nonperishable food ready to eat. Do not forget to add a manual can opener, a battery-powered radio, flashlight and extra batteries. You must also include a first aid kit, prescription and non-prescription medicine, and copies of important documents. It is important that all of these items are placed in a sturdy container, easy to carry and reviewed every six months.
2. Make a plan. It is important to make sure that the entire family is prepared and informed in the event of a disaster or emergency. Identify multiple routes persons could take if they must evacuate. Pick two places to meet: right outside the home in case of a sudden emergency such as a fire and outside the neighborhood in case residents cannot return home or are asked to evacuate. Also, plan ahead for pets. Choose an out-of-area emergency contact person and make sure all family members have the contact information.
3. Be informed. Learn the types of disasters or emergencies that may likely occur in the area. These events can range from those affecting only you and your family, like a home fire or medical emergency, to those affecting the entire community, like an earthquake or flood. Identify how local authorities will notify you during a disaster and how you will get information, whether through local radio, TV or NOAA Weather Radio stations or channels.
