Wanted Female Surrenders to Police

Shanequa Rivera, wanted on charges of first-degree assault in the shooting of a 20-year-old male, turned herself in to police at 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

According to police, Rivera was identified as the person who on Thursday shot a young man in the Mutual Homes Apartments. On Friday Criminal Investigation Bureau detectives made public a wanted poster for her arrest and urged Rivera to turn herself in.

Police have classified this as a case of domestic violence, and Rivera was held without bail pending further court action.

Police said Rivera shot the victim while he was sitting in a vehicle.

Acting St. Croix Police Chief James Parris thanked the community for information they gave on the whereabouts of Rivera and to her family and friends who persuaded her to turn herself into police.

“It was best for her just to turn herself in,” Parris said. “Officers had already distributed the wanted poster to all the ports before it was distributed to the public.”

“If she tried to leave the island by plane or boat, she would have been arrested,” Parris said. “It was just a matter of time.”
