Medical Center Welcomes Bernard A. Wheatley as New CEO

The St. Thomas-St. John District Governing Board will formally welcome and introduce Bernard A. Wheatley, Ph.D., as the new CEO of the Schneider Regional Medical Center at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 8, at Charlotte Kimelman Cancer Institute.
Wheatley received his bachelor’s degree in health administration from St. Joseph’s College, New York; his master’s degree from the New York Institute of Technology; and his doctorate from Northcental University in Arizona. He has attained certificates from executive programs in health care management from Ohio State University and in health care policy from Harvard University. In 2011, he received the Regent’s Senior Executive Award from the American College of Healthcare Executives in recognition of his significant contribution to the advancement of healthcare management.
For the past 18 years, he has been the vice president of operations at Athens Regional medical Center in Georgia. In that position, he directed facilities management, which included construction, engineering, biomedical, telecommunications, project management, security, dietary, environmental services and more. Earlier in his career, he served at United Hospital Medical Center and Robert Wood University Hospital, both in New Jersey. He is also a certified radiologic technologist.
A native Virgin Islander, is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and a member of the National Association of Healthcare Executives.
Cornel Williams, chairman of the District Governing Board, said that Wheatley has over 30 years of experience in hospital work and would be bringing a wealth of skill and knowledge to SRMC. Wheatley’s selection as the new CEO was divulged by the board in February. He was chosen from a field of qualified applicants, based upon his extensive and prestigious experience in health care settings and his familiarity with the territory.
“I am delighted to be the new chief executive officer of Schneider Regional Medical Center. It has always been my goal to return to the Virgin Islands to work, and it is an honor to use my education and experience to benefit my own community,” Wheatley said.
