Adella Cecilia Mitchell Dies at 78

Adella Cecilia Mitchell, age 78, passed away in the loving company of family members on Sunday, March 24, in Miami Gardens, Fla. Adella was born to the late Agustin and Princess Hazzard on Aug. 22, 1934, in St. David’s, Grenada. Adella lived in Plumrose, Grenada, and later La Romaine, Trinidad, before settling in Christiansted, St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands.
On Feb. 25, 1960, she married her husband of more than five decades, Joseph “Sonny” Mitchell. To this union, two boys and two girls were born. Adella and Joseph celebrated 53 years of holy matrimony on Feb. 25, 2013.
Adella worked at St. Croix’s Hotel on the Cay for much of her professional career before retiring from the resort in the early 90s. She was an active member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church on St. Croix and a dedicated member of the church choir.
Adella is survived by her husband, Joseph Mitchell; four children: Stacy Bruno of Miami Gardens, Fla.; Barbara Hazzard of Long Island, NY; Ray-Anthony Hazzard of Delray Beach, Fla., and John Mitchell of New Haven, Conn.; and a sister: Merle Hypolite of Brooklyn, NY. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and a host of extended family and friends too numerous to mention.
A viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, in Pembroke Pines, Fla. A funeral mass will follow directly at 2 p.m.
