Summer Positions at Friends of Park

Beef up your resume on St. John with an unpaid internship at Friends of V.I. National Park or a paid crew leader position with the Student Conservation Association. The crew leader job is organized by the Friends group.

“The internship is a wonderful opportunity for students who are interested in environmentalism,” Friends program manager Karen Jarvis said.

The internship will run for eight to 10 weeks from May through August. The actual dates will depend on the intern’s school schedule.

The internship provides experience in working with a national park and with an environmental, nonprofit organization.

The intern will assist the Friends in project management and administrative support.

Candidates for the internship should be college students entering their junior or senior year or graduate students with a major in a field related to the environmental sciences or environmental education. Candidates should have excellent writing and Internet research skills, and must be self-motivated and strong team players.

While the internship only pays in experience, housing in a tent at Cinnamon Bay Campground and a food and a transportation stipend of $250/week is included.

The crew leader job runs for six weeks during summer. “We’re looking for science teachers or anybody who has done this kind of volunteer work,” Jarvis said.

The person will supervise local high school students ages 15 to 19 on trail maintenance projects. In a departure from previous years, the program will be limited to St. Thomas and St. John high school students who will live at home rather than at Cinnamon Bay Campground.

Jarvis said she didn’t know how much the job would pay. To apply for the crew leader position, call Jarvis at 779-4940 or email her at kjarvis@friendsvinp.org .

For the internship position, send a resume with cover letter and two references by March 8 to Summer Internship Program, Friends of Virgin Islands National Park, P.O. Box 811, St. John, VI 00831 or via Jarvis’ email.
