Delegate Named to Three Energy and Commerce Subcommittees

V.I. Congressional Delegate Donna Christensen has been named to three subcommittees on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, her office announced Tuesday.

Christensen, the first V.I. congressional representative to serve on Energy and Commerce, said that she was pleased with her assignments because their jurisdictions are appropriate to the issues that face the U.S. Virgin Islands at this time.

Christensen returns to the Subcommittee on Health, which covers public health and quarantine; hospital construction; mental health and research; biomedical programs; health protection, including public and private health insurance; food and drugs; and drug abuse.

“As we work to implement health care reform and as we work to address the challenges faced by our hospitals and health care delivery systems, I am pleased to be back on this subcommittee,” she said in a statement Tuesday.

Christensen also secured a seat on the Subcommittee on Energy and Power, which covers national energy policy; fossil energy; renewable energy resources and synthetic fuels; energy conservation, regulation and utilization; utility issues and regulation of nuclear facilities; interstate energy compacts; and The Clean Air Act and air emissions.

“With affordable, reliable energy being the number one issue that faces our community at this time, this is the place to be as we work to help the territory in its transition to a better system,” Christensen said.

She will also sit on the Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade, which covers interstate and foreign commerce, including all trade matters within the jurisdiction of the full committee; regulation of commercial practices (the Federal Trade Commission); consumer affairs and consumer protection; consumer product safety and liability; motor vehicle safety; and the regulation of travel, tourism, and time.

“This is also very important to the territory because in addition to covering our main industry of travel and tourism, it also covers shipping issues which affect our economy,” she said.

Christensen will no longer serve on the Communications and Technology subcommittee. “While I regret not being able to stay on … I do feel that my years there have been fruitful for the Virgin Islands and all of those issues eventually come before the entire Energy and Commerce Committee and so I plan to stay involved there as well,” she said.
