Governor John P. deJongh Jr. has proclaimed Jan. 13-19, 2013 as “Delta Sigma Sorority Week” in the Virgin Islands to honor the sorority’s 100 years of dedication and service in the territory and throughout the world.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was founded on Jan. 13, 1913 at Howard University by 22 college-educated women. The private, non-profit organization strives to provide support in local communities through economic and educational development, international and political awareness campaigns and as advocates of physical and mental health.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is a sisterhood of more than 200,000 predominantly black, college-educated women, with more than 900 chapters in the United States, England, Japan, Germany, Bermuda, Korea, Jamaica, Bahamas and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In March 2003, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority became a non-governmental organization at the United Nations, charged with monitoring the status of women and children throughout the world and providing analysis and expertise in monitoring and implementing international agreements on issues that affect the sorority.
“I congratulate all the women of Delta Sigma Theta on the countless contributions their sorority has made over the last century throughout the world and here in the territory, where four chapters of the sorority have thrived thanks to the devotion of alumnae and current students at the University of the Virgin Islands,” deJongh said.
The four Virgin Islands chapters of Delta Sigma Theta are: St. Croix Alumnae Chapter, St. Thomas Alumnae Chapter, Sigma Psi Chapter (University of the Virgin Islands St. Thomas campus) and Sigma Omega Chapter (University of the Virgin Islands St. Croix campus).
On Jan. 13, 2013, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated will celebrate its 100th anniversary with a Centennial Celebration recognizing the charity, commitment and community service of the following organizations: American Cancer Society, Community Foundation of the U.S. Virgin Islands, Lions Clubs, Rotary Clubs of St Thomas and St. John, and United Ways of St. Thomas and St. John.
Governor deJongh urges Virgin Islanders to recognize the presence of the chapters and members of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority residing in the Virgin Islands who work tirelessly to continue the legacy of their founders in providing public service to the people of the territory.
