Santa, Christmas Trees, Carols at Botanical Gardens

Christmas decorations by Jan Mitchell at the 2011 celebration at the St. George Village Botanical Gardens.Cups will overflow with yuletide cheer, with Santa Claus, Christmas trees, holiday carols, hot food and lots of opportunities for Christmas shopping at St. George Village Botanical Garden’s annual holiday extravaganza, "Christmas Spoken Here," on Sunday.

"We will have Santa and probably a couple of elves with any luck," said Holly Herold, the garden’s director of administration and development, on Monday. There will be art projects for children, she added.

St. Croix Country Day School, Good Hope, St. Croix Central High and the joint choirs of Southgate Baptist and Calvary Baptist will regale revelers with Christmas music, Herold said.

A hundred different vendors will fill the historical grounds with cakes and pastries, guavaberry rum, crafts of all sorts, original art, clothing, jewelry and other potential Christmas gifts. There will be pottery, jams, sauces, music, woodcrafts, and hand-made body and shower products.

The gardens will also be holding a "White Reindeer" sale of all the items people have donated over the year.

"This year, instead of posting a price on everything, we will ask everyone to make an offer" Herold said. “If you want something, tell us what you want to pay for it and hopefully it will be something we want to accept.”

Christmas shoppers might find the perfect gift for each person on their lists. And if all that shopping makes people hungry, they can head over to the food vendors area for some hot, fresh fare.

There will be any number of painstakingly decorated Christmas trees on display. And someone will win a raffle for a Christmas tree decorated by St. Croix artist Jan Mitchell, whose handmade glass Christmas ornaments always make good presents.

The doors open at 11 a.m. and will stay open until 5 p.m. Admission is $5, and free for children under 12.
