DLCA Contracts New Testing Agency for Professional Exams

The Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs has secured a contract with PSI Services LLC to provide test development services and computer-based testing services for various professions. It also announces that all barber and cosmetology exams will be offered in dual languages, both English and Spanish, according to a press release issued on Tuesday by DLCA. Additionally, having recognized the growing number of test takers from overseas, the manicurist exam will now be offered in Vietnamese. PSI services will include, but is not limited to, the following exams:
• Real Estate exams (broker, salesperson, and appraisers).
• Construction exam (general contractor).
• Certified Public Accountant exam (state portion only).
• Trade exams (electrician, plumbing, HVAC mechanical).
• Barber, Esthetician, and Cosmetologist exams (English & Spanish).
o Manicurist (English, Spanish, and Vietnamese).
In the past, DLCA utilized Prometric Services, which served as the only testing service available locally. However, Prometric ceased to offer exams in the territory due to what they considered a low volume of test takers. “Immediately following Prometric’s decision, the department actively engaged in a search to identify an alternate testing agency to create, administer, and score the required exams, in accordance with established national standards. All individuals approved by their respective boards or commissions will be able to take their required exams in the beginning months of 2013. As soon as an official start date is confirmed, the department will make it known to the public,” said Commissioner Wayne Biggs.
Persons should also note that testing fees have increased for the respective exams and are effective immediately. For additional information or questions regarding the new fees, contact the Boards and Commissions Office on St. Croix at 718-2226 or on St. Thomas at 774-3130.
