Winnelta Fredericks, a 28-year-old woman riding as a passenger in a vehicle that passed through Frederiksted on Tuesday, was killed by a gunshot fired by an unknown person, the V.I. Police Department reported.
It was the 26th homicide on Frederiksted since the first of the year, the 50th in the territory in 2012.
According to the police report, the shooting took place at about 11:30 p.m.
While en route to respond to a call of shots fired, officers were told of a shooting victim inside a vehicle near Estate Williams Delight. At that scene, police found an unresponsive female who appeared to have gunshot wounds to her body. The vehicle was also damaged by gunshots, and the woman was in the front passenger seat.
The woman was taken to the Juan F. Luis Hospital and pronounced dead at about 1:30 a.m.
Police said the driver of the vehicle, also a female, had minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
