Gov. John deJongh Jr. nominated Magistrate Judge Kathleen Mackay to be a V.I. Superior Court judge Wednesday, according to a statement from Government House.
If confirmed, Mackay will replace Judge Brenda Hollar for a six-year term.
“Over a long career, Kathleen Mackay has proven herself to be a first-rate attorney, and for the past few years she has demonstrated a commendable judicial temperament as a magistrate judge in the Superior Court,” deJongh said.
Mackay has been a magistrate judge since July 2009, and in that position, she presided over criminal bench trials, advice-of-rights hearings, landlord/tenant and small claims cases, traffic court and domestic violence cases. As a Superior Court judge, she would preside over jury trials and more serious cases as well.
Before joining the Superior Court, Mackay was a partner at the law firm of Hodge and Mackay. She was admitted to the Virgin Islands Bar Association in 1987.
Mackay holds a law degree from Rutgers University Law School and a bachelor’s degree from George Washington University.
