Do a good deed and sign up to assist at St. John’s second annual Project Homeless Connect: A Day of Caring. This community event will be held Oct. 26, but volunteers are asked to attend a pizza and planning session from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Inn at Tamarind Court. Volunteer training from is Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Nazareth Lutheran Church.
If you can’t attend those sessions but still want to volunteer, St. John Community Foundation Director Celia Kalousek suggested you call her.
“We’ll review it,” she said.
Kalousek said that for planning purposes, the organizers need to know in advance who will serve as volunteers.
Volunteers are needed to serve as escorts to accompany the homeless clients to stations where they will receive services. Kalousek said volunteers with food handlers cards are needed to serve breakfast and lunch to the clients.
Volunteers who can provide services such as haircuts and massages are also needed.
Donations of clothing, shoes, belts, purses, hats, toiletries, hygiene products and canned food are requested, Kalousek said. Food is also needed to serve meals to the clients and volunteers.
She said clothing should be dropped off at Kilroy Laundry or at the Project Homeless Connect Table at Saturday’s Animal Care Center of St. John’s No Fleas Please flea market at the Winston Wells ballfield.
Kalousek said to call her if you can donate the other items.
Project Homeless Connect is sponsored by United Way of the Virgin Islands and the Human Services Department.
It will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Human Services building and parking lot located across from the fire station in Cruz Bay. It will provide medical and social services, including referrals, to the island’s homeless population to ensure they don’t fall through the cracks.
According to Kalousek, last year’s event served 60 of St. John’s homeless residents.
