Results of Dirty Duathlon Given

Over 30 junior athletes took to the line this morning in Gallow’s Bay for the Dirty Duathlon. The run/bike/run event, hosted and sponsored by the Virgin Islands Triathlon Federation, was the first race in the 2012-2013 Junior Tri VI series. All of the events are open to kids from all schools and of all abilities ages 5-15.
With the help of the Interact Club of CDS and many other regular volunteers, the event kicked off at 8 a.m. with the 5-6 year-old group. Devante Larsen of the Good Hope School lead the group of nine for most of the way. He finished the .25 mile run/.5 mile bike/.25 mile run just one second ahead of CDS Mason Lambert. Joey Croney, also of CDS, was third. Kirra Lambert was the first place female finisher, followed by Emberlyn Warehime.
The 7-8 year-old group completed the same distance but at a much faster pace. Mikey Dizon-Bumann went out fast and held off second place, Masse Hatcher, by nearly 50 seconds. Stefan Moorman was third. Arias Moses kept right up with the boys and finished first for the girls (and third overall). Charlotte Halk was second and Zavira Wilson was third. One stand-out finish was by AZ Academy student Kalani Watkins, who cut off over four minutes from his time from last year.
The finish of the first leg of the race was very tight coming through the shoot. Once on the bike, Colby Moran of AZ Academy took off and never looked back. He finished the .5 mile run/1 mile bike/.5 mile run over 1 1/2 minutes ahead of second place finisher, CDS student Andreas Moorman. Cooper Crowther had a solid race and finished in third. Melinda Elser held her own against the boys as the lone female competitor. Mikey Dizon-Bumann, fresh off of his win in the 7-8 year-old race, jumped in the race for an extra workout.
After waiting patiently for their race to begin, the oldest group, the 12-15 year-olds, completed the .5 mile run/2 mile bike/1 mile run at the hottest part of the day. Bevern Sage of Elena Christian hammered the first portion of the race and stayed ahead of the rest of the field to finish first, in spite of his hard-impact dismount from the bike. Eva Luna Wittmann was the first female. CDS 7th grader Sophie Dean was second, followed by Hailey Coates in third.
Thanks go to the parents who provided refreshments and assistance on the course. A big shout out goes to Brad and Cat Lenhart for the awesome race T-shirts and to Road ID for the goodie bags and numbers. The next race, a Salsa Splash ‘n Dash, will take place at 8 a.m. on Sunday, Nov 25, at Chenay Bay.
