Markoe School Honors Life of Rothschild Francis

Students at Claude O. Markoe Elementary School will perform musical selections, and reading poetry and essays to highlight the untold accomplishments of Virgin Islander Rothschild Francis. The students will participate in a school-wide program at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4, in the school cafeteria to commemorate the life and accomplishments of Francis.
Born on St. Thomas in 1891, he is renowned for being “one of the territory’s most assertive yet controversial leaders, who devoted his life to furthering the cause of civil rights for Virgin Islanders,” according to a brief biography in U.V.I.’s Profiles ’92. Moreover, Rothschild Francis was distinguished in his homeland for being an elected member of the Colonial Council (legislative body), a labor leader and a journalist who published The Emancipator.
For more information on the Rothschild Francis program at the school, call Assistant Principal Faith George at 772-4510.
